Your mum has bought gold the same way for thirty years. She walks into the shop, picks the piece, pays, and walks out with it in her hand.
So when you tell her you've started buying gold on your phone, she asks one question.
"Is that even halal?"
Fair question. Here's the simple answer.
The short answer
Yes, digital gold can be halal. But the app doesn't make it halal. What happens behind the app does.
Why does gold have special rules?
In Islam, gold isn't treated like everything else you buy. A well-known hadith says gold must be traded "hand to hand".
In simple words: when you pay for gold, it has to become yours right then. Not next week. Not over twelve instalments.
That one rule is why some gold products are fine and others aren't.
What makes digital gold halal?
Four simple checks.
- It's real gold. Actual bars sitting in a vault. Not a bet on the price.
- It's yours the moment you pay. You don't need to hold it in your hand, but it has to belong to you straight away. Scholars call this qabd hukmi, which just means ownership counts even when the gold stays in the vault.
- You pay in full. No interest. No paying it off over months.
- Nobody promises you a profit. If the price goes up, you gain. If it goes down, you lose. That's what owning something means.
Who decides what counts?
There's a rulebook for this. It's called AAOIFI Shari'ah Standard No. 57, and it was launched in Dubai in 2016 with the World Gold Council. Most Shariah boards in the Gulf use it when they check a gold product.
What usually fails?
- Gold trading apps where you never own any gold. You're just betting on the price.
- Paying for gold in instalments.
- "Gold plans" that promise a fixed return. A fixed return is just interest with a different name.
What does "pooled" gold mean?
At JustGold, customers' gold sits together in one vault. There isn't a bar with your name stamped on it.
But you own an exact amount of real gold, recorded in your account. Scholars call this constructive ownership. It's accepted in Shariah as long as four things are true: the gold is really there, it's really owned, nobody has borrowed against it, and you can have it delivered when you ask.
Think of it like a family's gold kept in one locker. Everyone knows exactly whose share is whose.
Where does JustGold stand?
- Every gram is real 24K gold.
- It's kept at Amanat Vaults in Sharjah. Here in the UAE, not in another country.
- You pay in full when you buy. No instalments. No promised returns.
- You own an exact amount of real gold, recorded in your account. It's kept separate from our company's money. It's your property, not ours.
- You can take your gold out as a real bar, from 1 gram.
- We're Shariah certified by Panacea Consultants under AAOIFI Standard 57.
Ask any gold app these five questions
- Who certified you as Shariah compliant? Can I see it?
- Is there real gold behind my balance?
- Where is it kept? In which country?
- Can I take it out as a real bar?
- Do I pay the full price when I buy?
That third one matters more than people think. Some apps here call themselves Shariah compliant, but keep your gold in another country. Ours stays in the UAE.
If they can't answer all five, keep looking. And yes, ask us too.
Back to your mum
She bought gold because it was real, it was hers, and there was no interest in it. Digital gold, done properly, keeps all three.
It just skips the drive to the souk.
This is general information, not a fatwa. For your own situation, speak to a scholar you trust.
FAQ
Is buying gold online halal?
It can be. What matters is that the gold is real, you pay in full, and it becomes yours straight away.
Do I pay zakat on digital gold?
Yes, the same as any gold you save. Zakat is 2.5% of its value once you've held 85 grams or more for a full Islamic year.
