You walk into a gold shop in Deira with a budget in your head.
Twenty minutes later, you walk out with a bangle, a receipt, and a lighter wallet than you planned.
"At least it's gold," you tell yourself. "It's an investment."
Is it, though? Let's look at that receipt.
What are you really paying for?
A gold receipt has four parts. Only one of them is gold.
- The gold. Priced by weight and karat. Jewellery is usually 22K or 18K, so it isn't all gold.
- Making charges. What the jeweller charges to make the piece. This is the only part you can bargain on.
- VAT.5% on jewellery, and on the making charges too.
- The part you never get back. When you sell, the shop pays you for the gold. The making charges and VAT are gone.
Let's do the maths
Say you buy a 20 gram, 22K bangle. We've used the 22K rate in Dubai on 28 October 2026, about AED 453 a gram.
| How | AED | |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 20 g × AED 453 | 9,060 |
| Making charges | 20 g × AED 20 | 400 |
| VAT (5%) | on 9,460 | 473 |
| You pay | 9,933 | |
| You sell it back the same day | gold value, before the shop's buyback deduction | 9,060 at most |
| Gone on day one | 873 or more |
That's almost 9% gone the moment you buy it, and that's the best case. Many shops also take a separate deduction when they buy jewellery back for cash, for wastage and melting. So the real loss is usually bigger.
What about gold bars?
Better than jewellery if you're saving. But you still have four problems.
- Where do you keep it? Under the mattress isn't a plan. A bank locker costs money.
- You pay minting charges upfront. And when you sell the bar back, you don't get them back.
- Small bars cost more per gram. So saving a little every month gets expensive.
- Selling means going back to the shop and taking whatever price they give you that day.
How is digital gold different?
- No making charges. You're paying for gold, not design.
- No VAT. Investment-grade gold isn't charged VAT. You only pay VAT on minting and delivery if you take it out as a bar.
- It's all gold. 24K, every gram.
- Nothing to hide at home. It sits in a vault right here in the UAE, at Amanat Vaults.
- Buy and sell 24/7 from your phone.
- Want something to hold? Take it out as a real bar, from 1 gram. You only pay minting and certificate charges if you do. Keep it digital and sell later, and you never pay them at all.
To be fair, every gold app has a small gap between its buying and selling price. It's called the spread. Ours is usually 2 to 3%, and it covers storage, insurance and running costs. There are no other charges, and you see the final price before you confirm.
So compare. Around 9% gone on day one at the shop. Around 2 to 3% on the app.
So which one should you choose?
| If you want to... | Go for |
|---|---|
| Wear it, or mark a wedding or Eid | Jewellery |
| Keep one big bar for years | A bar from a dealer you trust |
| Save a little every month | Digital gold |
| Sell some quickly if you need cash | Digital gold |
Jewellery is for wearing. Digital gold is for saving. Most families need both.
The bottom line
Your family has always saved in gold. Keep doing that.
Just stop paying 9% for it.
